Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 18 orthopedic hospitals, 3 burn hospitals, and 1 hospital that provides orthopedic, burn, and spinal cord injury care. Children up to their 18th birthday, receive excellent medical care- absolutely free of charge.

The Shrine supported various charities almost from its inception in 1872. In 1920, however, the organization voted to adopt its own official philanthropy, dedicated to providing free orthopedic medical care to children in need, and the first Shriner’s Hospital was built in Shreveport LA in 1922. The Shrine’s philanthropy eventually expanded to 22 “Centers of Excellence”. There is never a charge to the patient or parent, regardless of their ability to pay on their income. No third party insurance and no U.S. government funding of any kind is sought or accepted  for any service or medical treatment receivedat the Shriner’s Hospitals. The hospitals are soley supported by gifts and donations, bequests, income from the endowment fund, hospital fund raising events, and the annual hospital assesment paid by every Shriner. All proceeds from the Carter County Shrine Club paper sale and “passing the bucket” at out local events are given to the hospital fund.
